In the bestselling tradition of Big Russ and Me, America’s most visible sports commentator tells the stories of some of the most dramatic moments in American sports and pays tribute to the man who inspired him to pursue his broadcasting dream— his beloved father, who has fallen victim to the ravages of Alzheimer’s disease.

Vividly written in exciting, you-are-there replay, Always by My Side gives readers an insider’s look into an unprecedented sixty-three-day stretch from February to April of 2007 when Jim Nantz became the first broadcaster to call the Super Bowl, the Final Four, and the Masters. Because Nantz was unable to share the voyage with his dad, however, this remarkable journey through America’s premier sporting events took on a bittersweet tinge. Nonetheless, the devoted son felt his father’s presence every step of the way, and used this championship odyssey to celebrate the people, venues, and moments that tapped into all the goodness that his dad—and his dad’s generation— represent.

In recounting the highlights of more than two thrilling decades with CBS Sports, this broadcasting hall of famer recalls the legends of the industry—Dick Enberg, Curt Gowdy, Jim McKay, Chris Schenkel, Pat Summerall, Jack Whitaker, and others—who sparked his imagination and shaped his style.

Always by My Side traces Nantz’s career, from creating his own imaginary studio as a boy to his college days rooming with future PGA Tour golfers Fred Couples and Blaine McCallister to his successful network audition at age twenty-six. Along the way, readers are treated to an array of memories, including Nantz’s special relationship with the former president George H. W. Bush, as well as his friendships with such sports royalty as Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Peyton Manning, Tony Dungy, Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Mike Krzyzewski, John Wooden, and many others. Poignant stories that explore the theme of fathers and sons who have bonded through a common love of sports complete this sparkling narrative.

Always by My Side promises to be the most cherished Father’s Day gift of the year.

What Customers Say About Always By My Side: A Father's Grace and a Sports Journey Unlike Any Other:

I bought this book because of an interview I heard on the radio detailing his thoughts about his Dad, and how Golf brought them together. Instead I got a bunch of cliches and rubbish about his perfect life, which we now know is hardly perfect. Who cares.don't waste your time or money.

Why. After reading about Jim's recent divorce/affair.and his stated reason that his "wife lost interest in his career," - I kind of get it. Well, based on reading previous reader posts, I guess I need to read the final few chapters. Jim seems to focus more on his career aspirations and celebrity worship/influence.rather than the influence of his family. This book does like one with a more favorable impression of former President GW Bush. I have read many inspirational, yet sad family stories. Photos of wife and daughter, but little mention of wife's influence or devotion.

However, looking for inspirational stories that that align with something you would read in TUESDAYS WITH MAURIE,. I put this book down in disgust after reading 3/4 of the book. If you want anecdotal professional golf stories - then I wouldn't pass this up. This wasn't one of them. As the summary states, Dad gets put away in a home, and the surrogate father (GW Bush and others) takes over and fills the void. well, forget it. I must add that point.

I wish he had spent more time sharing this special relationship rather than a lot of the filler stories about golf moments at the Augusta Masters or a weekend at the Final Four. I read the story for the interest in his relationship with his dad.

I must confess I did not enjoy the book as much as I had hoped but this was because I am not a great American golf, NFL, or NCAA fan and I feel because of this the book was not really meant for me. I got the book as a Father's Day present from my wife because she had heard good reviews about it.

I'm not sure what the book was really about as most of the 288 pages relate special moments in Jim's career working his way up to the local and then CBS sports ladder. So if you're American and know about Jim's work then this is probably a book for you.I had not heard much of Jim Nantz or cared much about CBS sports and the people he mentions.

I should be awed at what he achieved but am not. And when he writes about this - especially in the final sections - his love for his dad and their relationship shines through and is moving.

But then as I said I'm not really sure what the book was about in the end and it left me wanting to know more about what was always by his side.

We "baby generation" individuals can relate to those expressions quite often that are announced throughout the book. Jim Nantz provides some insightful stories explaining his success in his sports broadcasting career to date. Nantz speaking to the reader in honest and humble ways. Nantz on wise expressions from his father. I often wondered,"Why was this story placed here." The book did not seem as organized as Tim Russert's books, BIG RUSS AND ME, or LETTERS FROM MY FATHER.In conclusion, the book is written in a very pleasurable way. Furthermore, the pleasant stories and experiences with his father are not only heartwarming, but enlightening.

Nantz's father, and seeping into our hearts. The only weakness I felt reading this work was that no true "organization" seemed evident. One can hear Mr. These expressions were "whispers in the wind" coming Mr. As a person myself, who is seeing his mother's mind slip in stages of Alzheimer's, it is a help to see the courage and fortitude of Mr. Nantz to provide the best he can to his father.Numerous adages are provided by Mr. Stories jump back year to year, person to person, sport to sport.

The humbleness and gratitude to his father are very evident in this work.

Written in a rather common fashion, Nantz's story is nonetheless affecting, and has the ability to touch one's heart. A successful sportscaster, Jim Nantz has touched many with //Always By My Side//, a memoir surrounding his relationship with his father and his father's fall into the depths of Alzheimer's Disease. This re-release includes not only the original content--a tender remembrance of the ins and outs, ups and downs of his personal relationship with his father--but also expanded content, including the addition of pictures and an afterword that deals with the aftermath of Nantz's father's death. With this in mind, it still resembles countless books in the genre and style, and is not particularly groundbreaking in any way. Nantz has written, with //Always By My Side//, an uplifting book for the everyday person.Reviewed byJordan Dacayanan
